請(qǐng)先閱讀下面文章,摘錄不熟悉的詞匯和短語(yǔ):
It is one of the mostfamous birds ever to have lived but the dodo is still a bit of a mystery. It'soften portrayed as a heavy, slow and not very clever animal -in the 2002 filmIce Age, some very silly dodos fight over three watermelons-but a new researchproject is challenging this image.
Scientists know the dodowas a flightless bird that lived on Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean.Little is known about dodos because they became extinct in the 17th century,before accurate modern methods for recording animals had been introduced. Inthe latest study, a research team looked through 400 years of writing on thedodo and analysed scientific collections around the UK. They concluded that thedodo was probably not such a clumsy bird after all. Dr Mark Young, one of theresearchers, said written descriptions of live dodos suggested the bird was a"fast-moving animal that loved the forest".
The researchers alsostudied dodo bones and came to the conclusion that the tendons (腱) the bird used to close its toeswere powerful-as is also the case with climbing and running birds that existtoday. They think this is further evidence that the dodo was an active, speedybird.
Scientists think dodosbecame extinct because of Dutch sailors who settled in Mauritius. They huntedthe birds and, because dodos hadn't faced any predators on the island beforethat time, they weren't afraid of humans and were easy to catch. However, scientistsalso say that animals the humans brought with them-including cats, dogs, pigsand rats- were what pushed the dodo to extinction. The animals ate the dodos'chicks and trampled their habitat. The solitaire, a similar bird species thatlived on the nearby island of Rodrigues, also died out for the same reasons.
