Maya Merhige is making majorwaves in swimming. She is now the third youngest person to complete finish anathletic challenge known as the Triple Crown. At the age of 16, she swam 23 milesacross the English Channel in the UK with a time of 11 hours, 39 minutes.
Merhige had already completedthe other two Triple Crown swims. At age 14, with a time of 10 hours, 48minutes, she became the youngest female to swim the 20-mile Catalina Channel inCalifornia. Open-water swimmingbecame her passion at age 9 when she got involved with Swim Across America, anonprofit organization that funds cancer research. “I’ve been feeling thateveryone is touched by cancer as I’ve gotten older, and it’s become moreimportant to me to raise money for this cause,” Merhige, now17, told The WeekJunior. Since she started, she has raised more than $100,000.
Oneof her favorite swims was crossing the 28-mile Kaiwi Channel in Hawaii. Sheswam it at age 15, making her the youngest person to do so. It took her morethan 27 hours to complete it, and she faced strong winds and jellyfish.
Althoughthe physical and mental challenges of her sport are difficult, Merhige said hergreatest fear is not finishing a swim. Her goal is to complete the Oceans Sevenby 2029, and with her Triple Crown swims, she has four more to go.
Asshe considers the journey ahead, Merhige said it helps to “constantly remindmyself to stay in the moment.”
